Lee Green Youth Club: Bigger and better

Lee Green Youth Club, providing much-needed facilities for local youngsters, is back during school term time.

The club will provide a wide range of FREE activities for 8-18 year olds – including music, sport, arts and games – from Lochaber Hall in Manor Lane Terrace, on Friday nights from 6-9pm, and they hope to expand that programme, depending on demand.

They will also use the hall as a base for holiday activities, which will include trips that may require a small fee to cover expenses, but are otherwise FREE. The next holiday scheme will take place at half-term at the end of May.

The club formerly ran term-time activities until 2016, but found their former premises at the community centre in Leegate too small. They continued to use the centre as a base for the holiday activities.

“Lochaber Hall enables us to do much more,” says Tony Cisse of Triple Helix training, who run the scheme with the help of a grant from Lewisham Council’s Youth First programme. “There simply wasn’t enough room to allow the youngsters to flourish.”

Traditionally, youth clubs focus on young people from 12 upwards, but the Lee Green scheme, run by group leaders Sasha Elliott and Theo Mendez, has always also supported a younger age group. It works well because many families find it more difficult to ensure their young children’s needs are safely met.

“We’re indebted to Lee Green Lives for continuing to allow us to use the Leegate centre to host the holiday schemes,” says Tony. “Indeed, it was they who found Lochaber Hall for us.”

Jonathan White, Chairman of Lochaber Hall Association, says he’s thrilled they are able to offer their premises to the youth club. “We have wanted to increase our involvement in the local community and, thanks to our joining the Lee Green Consortium of local community groups, we have been able to do just that.”
